The air battle was still underway. The Luftwaffe had already traded airfields for cities, giving RAF Fighter Command time to regroup.
On 30 September 1940, the Battle of Britain was still being fought. That day the Luftwaffe flew some of the last large daylight bomber raids of the battle, against London and the Westland works at Yeovil, and lost 47 aircraft to the RAF's 20. The campaign had begun on 10 July and would run until 31 October. The date fell between the opening attack and the eventual end, with the Luftwaffe and British air defences still contesting control of the skies.
