By dawn, the evacuation had carried about 2,400 men across the Lower Rhine. The last defenders had not all made it to the boats.
On the night of 25–26 September 1944, Major General Roy Urquhart’s 1st Airborne Division left its shrinking perimeter at Oosterbeek. The division had been cut off north of the Lower Rhine after the failure to hold the Arnhem crossing. Urquhart’s plan was to withdraw under cover of darkness, with the 1st Polish Parachute Brigade and soldiers of the 4th Dorsets helping to cover the retreat. Rain and darkness helped conceal the movement, though the route to the river remained dangerous. Some men took more than three hours to reach the assembly point at the Oude Kerk.
