Chembur started out as an industrial area, but now it is a largely residential suburb. Old bungalows and villas are now making way for high-rise apartments. Chembur has a cosmopolitan population that is dominated by maharashtrians, sindhis and south indians .
Chembur is sometimes referred to as 'gas chamber of Mumbai' because of its proximity to garbage incinerators. However, air pollution in Chembur is on the decline.
