The 1st Hussars is a armoured militia regiment of the Canadian Forces, based in London, Ontario. The regiment was formed on May 31, 1872, under the name 1st Regiment of Cavalry and was renamed 1st Hussars in 1892. Despite the number "1st" in the title, the regiment is not the most senior armoured regiment, because of the merging of more senior regiments from the Maritime provinces into the Canadian milita in 1867, and because of the conversion of some infantry regiments to armoured. In 2005, the regiment ranked seventh among armoured milita regiments.
One of the regiment's greatest claims to fame is that it was the Allied unit that penetrated deepest into Normandy on D-Day.
